HISTORY

At the time of Valentin Vodnik, the first recognized Slovenian poet, this very restaurant was a farm building with stales and haylofts. In this one-storey homestead the parents of the poet also had the so-called "furmanska gostilna" and on the market days they used to open their garden pavilion, today known as the "Pri Kamniti mizi" hall.

On the first floor of the house, where on the 3rd of February 1758 Jožef and Jera Pance from Vič became parents of Valentin, their first of six children, there are two rooms in which a permanent exhibition "Valentin Vodnik and his contemporaries from the enlightenment period" (Marko Pohlin, Jurij Japelj, Blaž Kumerdej, Anton-Tomaž Linhart, the first Slovenian dramatist, and Baron Žiga Zois, their patron) has been opened since the house renovation (from 1982 to 1984).

In the third room there is a permanent exhibition of the literary period "From the Freising Manuscripts (870) to Baroque", the main representatives being Primož Trubar and Janez Vajkard Valvazor. The Vodnik's Homestead is a cultural monument.
